Associate Professor Andrew Ang

Associate Professor Andrew Ang is a senior research engineer within the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Technology at Swinburne University of Technology, where he has worked since 2009. Andrew has a strong commitment to pathways for the efficient manufacture of industrial products demonstrated through his research activities and his numerous industrial collaborations, in particular the defence maintenance, repair and operations sector.

Distinguished Professor Milan Brandt

Distinguished Professor Milan Brandt is a Professor in Advanced Manufacturing in the School of Engineering, Technical Director Advanced Manufacturing Precinct and Director Centre for Additive Manufacturing, RMIT University.

Research interests:
- leading Australian researcher in the area of macro machining and additive manufacturing with lasers and has conducted work over the last 35 years in laser cladding, cutting, drilling, welding and more recently additive manufacturing. This has resulted in technological achievements, awards, patents, research papers and commercial products, which have been recognized internationally and nationally in both scientific and industrial circles.

Industry Professor Colin Hall is a researcher at the Future Industries Institute at the University of South Australia. With nine years in industry and 15 years in academia in the area of surface engineering via vacuum processes.

Distinguished Professor Ma Qian

Dr Ma Qian is a Distinguished Professor of the School of Engineering at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT University), Melbourne, Australia. His current research interests include (i) metal additive manufacturing (alloy design and lattice materials), (ii) powder metallurgy (PM) of light alloys, (iii) solidification processing, (iv) surface engineering for medical applications, (v) metallic biomaterials, and (vi) high entropy alloys.

With his research fellows, PhD students and collaborators, Professor Ma Qian has published 237 peer-reviewed journal articles and four Elsevier books on titanium alloys, including Titanium Powder Metallurgy: Science, Technology and Applications (editors: Ma Qian, F. H. Froes, Elsevier, 2015), Light Alloys (5th edition, Ian Polmear, David StJohn, Jie-Feng Nie, Ma Qian, Elsevier, 2015), Titanium in Medical and Dental Applications (editors: F. H. Froes, Ma Qian, Elsevier, 2018), and Titanium for Consumer Applications (editors: F. H. Froes, Ma Qian, M. Niinomi, Elsevier, 2019). His publications have attracted more than 8200 Scopus citations by November 2019 (>7300 excluding self-citations).

Professor Ma Qian initiated the biennial international conference on Titanium Powder Metallurgy in 2011 (co-sponsored by Materials Australia, TiDA, TMS, JSPM and CSM). The 6th PM Ti will be held in Montréal Canada. Professor Ma Qian served as the Organising Committee Chair and Conference Co-Chair for the Asia-Pacific International Conference on Additive Manufacturing at RMIT in Melbourne (2017 and 2019). Currently, He serves as an editorial member for a number of journals, including as an Associate Editor for both Acta Materialia and Scripta Materialia.

Robert McMahon

Rob is the Research Centre Manager for SEAM looking after the operations and administration of the Centre, overseeing its portfolio of projects and training experiences provided to PhD candidates and early career research fellows.

Rob has a wealth of experience in research administration having managed numerous research centres at Swinburne University of Technology, overseeing a multitude of Category 1, 2, 3 and 4 projects.

Fatma Mohammed

Fatma served as the Centre Operations Manager for the ARC Training Centre for Surface Engineering for Advanced Materials (SEAM) between 2022-2023, where she was responsible for the Centre’s operational and administrative functions. She oversaw the coordination of activities across all participating nodes and provided strategic support in organising training initiatives for PhD candidates and Early Career Researchers.

With extensive experience in research administration—particularly in post-award management—Fatma currently holds the position of Senior Grants Officer at Swinburne University of Technology, where she manages the ARC portfolio.

Ms Vesna Stefanovski

Vesna Stefanovski was SEAM’s original Business and Operations Manager, overseeing the Training Centre’s portfolio of projects and training experiences provided to PhD candidates and early career research fellows. Vesna has extensive experience working across leading tertiary institutions and major Government projects. She has held roles within research management in The University of Melbourne, managing research institutes and centres, including working as a Program Manager for ARC Laureate Fellowships. Currently she is Manager, Major Research Awards at Swinburne University of Technology where she is a key point of contact with the Australian Research Council.

Vesna continues to play a key part in SEAM’s operations, sitting on a number of its committees and being a liaison between SEAM and the ARC.

Kevin Thomson

Kevin Thomson has had 25 years experience in the manufacturing industry through technical and management roles, in both large and small companies, including plastics, automotive, and medical device manufacturers. He also has considerable experience as a technical consultant and has held senior roles in three start-up companies. Kevin has been involved in many collaborative research projects between industry and research organisations and is currently employed by CSIRO to deliver the Federal Government’s Innovation Connections program. He has a B.Sc.(hons), M.Eng.Sci. and Ph.D from Monash University and is a Graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.
