Abstract

Thermal barrier coatings (TBC) provide critical thermal protection to aerospace turbine blades. This talk covers TBC papers over the past 40 years (1980-2020) from Scopus. The publication data enable analysis of annual scholarly outputs and citation impact of leading countries, and institutions.

Patents in the Clarivate Analytics Derwent Innovation patent database on thermal barrier coating for turbine engine are analysed. Special focus is placed on the journal paper citations of patents, citations of journal papers in patents and the co-relation with highly cited papers in Scopus and highly cited patent (cited by patents) on TBC. By co-relating the publications of industry and research institutions with their patent filing and publication’s patent citations, an innovation relevance indicator (IRI) is introduced to evaluate the relevance of a company/institution’s research to technological innovation.

The IRI denotes the closeness of the research of an institution to an industrial applicable innovation. When applied together with the journal/conference publications, and patent filings, this indicator helps to identify those universities with strong industry relevant patents. Universities with significant number TBC patents fall into two broad categories, i) those with high (>70%) collaborations on patents filed, and ii) those that filed patents without existing external collaborations.

Bio

Professor Michael Khor obtained his B Sc (Hons) and PhD degrees from Monash University, Australia. He worked as an Experimental Scientist at the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organization (CSIRO) in Melbourne before joining the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in 1989. He has held a number of academic, research and administrative appointments, such as Director of Research; Director, Research Support Office; Deputy Director, Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA), Singapore Office; Director (Projects) at the National Research Foundation (NRF); Associate Provost (Research), President’s Office, NTU; Director, NTU Venture; and currently Director of Talent Recruitment & Career Support (TRACS) Office and Bibliometrics Analysis.

His research interests include thermal spray, plasma spray, spark plasma sintering and bibliometrics analysis.
