Filofteia-Laura Toma received her Bachelor Degree in Chemistry and Physics (1999), followed by a Master Degree in Physics and Chemistry of Materials (2001) from the University of Pitesti (Romania). She obtained her PhD (2004) on the development of photocatalytic active titanium oxide sprayed coatings for environmental applications from the University of Technology Belfort-Montbéliard (UTBM), Belfort, France. From 2006-2008 she was awarded a distinguished fellowship from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation at the Fraunhofer Institute for Material and Beam Technology (IWS) in Dresden. 2014-2017 she was the Manager of the Thermal Spray Group at Fraunhofer IWS and currently is the Senior Engineer Scientist. 2016-2017 she was awarded the Talenta Excelence Fellowship from Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft. Laura regularly lectures on Surface Technology at Technische Universität Dresden, Institute of Materials Science (IfWW).
With about 20 years of R&D experience in thermal spray, she works closely with academia and industry partners, ensuring support from the development of the advanced, multifunctional and environmental friendly ceramic and hard metal coating solutions and products up to the technology transfer, endorsing novel thermal coating solutions to industrial and environmental challenges.
Laura has been contributing to the JTST and TSS events for over 10 years and her continuously increasing role as co-editor or guest editor of the Proceedings of the ITSC Conferences and to the Special Issues of the JTST in addition to being on the organisation committee of three topical TSS. She is recognised as an international thermal spray expert being invited to give lectures worldwide and being selected regularly to review grant proposals. She also sits on national and international advisory or scientific committees.
